Aceh: Trauma likely in months to come

January 4, 2005 The Star, Malaysia

While many in Aceh are still reeling from the shock of the earthquake and the tsunami that changed their lives forever, it may be months before the trauma sets in.

Dr Lokman M. Nordin, who works at the Lhoksukon Trauma Centre, said a number of victims who were putting up at the various refugee camps had yet to hit “rock bottom” emotionally because they were surrounded by others who suffered the same fate.

Dr Lokman said a number of people at the camp were already traumatised.

“Some look dazed, some are crying all the time while others look sad and keep thinking of the people and all that they have lost.

“They are stressed. They can’t sleep or eat.

“One of the obvious signs that they are traumatised is that they will not go out of the refugee camp. They are afraid to step outside.

“They can’t bear to listen to the sound of airplanes or motorbikes because that was what the tsunami sounded like,” he said.
