On December 26, a large part of the coastline of India was devastated by a deadly Tsunami, causing immense damage to life, land and property.

Official estimates put the human casualties at around 8500 in India and more than 65,000 in the South / South East Asian Region and the United Nations has said that this could prove to be the costliest natural disaster the world has seen so far.

Vibha to kick of its relief efforts has sanctioned an immediate release of $5000 to fund relief operations and has started fund raising efforts for relief and rehabilitation of the affected communities. Vibha requests donors to contribute (tax deductible in the US) to the campaign at
http://www.vibha.org/emergencydonation

Three Vibha Projects have also been affected by this natural calamity. Vidyarambam, a pre-school program with centers all over Coastal Tamil Nadu is currently struggling to find information about 300 children and five teachers who are part of the program in Poompuhar and Thirumalaivasal. RSO, a toddler home supported by Vibha is located in a community of about 4000 people primarily engaged in fishing and this area has had extensive property damage. Currently Vidyarambam, Makkal Palli Iyakkam/Tamil Nadu Science Foundation (both in collaboration with AID-India) and RSO are working towards relief activities in affected communities.

The projects have already started emergency relief measures such as providing drinking water, food and blankets to the affected people. However, a major part of the activity is to get the affected communities back to normalcy and provide for emergency healthcare and nutrition – food, water and vaccinations for children and adults. The exact monetary requirements for the same will be known over the next few days, but we do know that every dollar and cent contributed to this campaign will be utilized because the long-term rehabilitation aspect will be extremely difficult as a lot of fishing villages have been wiped out without any trace.

Vibha’s Tsunami Emergency Relief Campaign Website is http://www.vibha.org/emergencyrelief

Donations for the Vibha Tsunami Emergency Relief Campaign can be made at:
http://www.vibha.org/emergencydonation

Donors can also mail their checks to:
Vibha
1030 E El Camino Real #424
Sunnyvale, CA 94087
Make Checks Payable to: “Vibha”, Memo: “Tsunami Emergency”

Contributions to Vibha are Tax Deductible in the US.

Vibha TM is a volunteer managed, US based 501 (c) (3) registered Non Profit Organization with over 15 action centers. Vibha’s vision is to ensure that every underprivileged child attains his or her right to education, health and opportunity. Vibha has supported over 130 child development projects in India and the US, impacting over a hundred thousand underprivileged children.
