Fearing tsunami, Pagadian folk flee their homes
Thousands of people in this city fled to higher ground fearing a tsunami was going to hit after the sea receded following an earthquake, officials said yesterday. The sea pulled back to an unusually low level last Thursday evening hours after being rattled by an earthquake that measured 4.9 on the Richter scale, officials said. Some 5,000 frightened residents fled, fearing a repeat of the Dec. 26 tsunamis caused by a 9.0 magnitude quake off Indonesia that devastated Indian Ocean shorelines and killed tens of thousands of people.
