More Tsunamis unlikely today: NGRI

Hyderabad, India, DEC 30.: The moderate intensity earthquakes reported today from the Indonesian island of Sumatra and the Andamans are unlikely to trigger anymore tsunamis, officials of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here have said.

Reacting to reports on the high alerts and panic situation on the Indiancoast after two earthquakes measuring 5.8 and 5.5 on the Richter Scale werelocated, NGRI Seismological Laboratory in-charge, M. Kausalya saidearthquakes of such low intensity did not usually create tsunamis.

“Scientifically speaking, there is no need to worry about tsunamis aftertoday’s earthquake. But we do not know for sure what is happening in thesea. There could be something that is not a result of today’s earthquakes.It could be a rumour as well,” Ms. Kausalya said.

Meanwhile, officials of the Indian Meteorological Department here said cautionary messages were issued following the 5.8 Mw earthquake with its epicentre at Sumatra at 2.43 a.m. today. There was no information as regards to formation of tsunamis, they said.
