Annan urges donors to convert pledges into cash quickly
Jakarta, Jan. 6 (PTI): Declaring that the task of providing relief to tsunami victims was "a race against time", UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, today appealed for nearly a billion dollar cash for urgent use as India and several other nations pledged to set up an Indian Ocean early warning system to save lives in the event of repeat of such a tragedy.
"The disaster was so brutal, so quick and so far reaching that we are still struggling to comprehend it," Annan said addressing a day-long summit of tsunami-hit countries and key aid donors here. External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh, represented India at the meet.
