High wave alert in Southern States, Andamans
Chennai/Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 30
Alerts on the possibility of fresh high waves led to precautionary measures in the coastal areas of the Southern States this morning.
Television channels said there was a fresh tsunami alert for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, while in Tamil Nadu, police imposed restrictions on access to the seaside in Chennai and other places, based on the alert.
PTI reported that the Kerala Government has asked the people along the coast to remain alert as there were possibilities of high waves striking again.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the Government had information from the Central agencies that the sea could turn turbulent by noon.
Reports from Kochi, quoting official sources said, people were being shifted from the western part of Vypeen island to its eastern portion.
Fearing that the tsunami waves would strike again, the people from Vypeen, said to be the most densly populated region in Asia, had been shifted to the mainland Ernakulam.
Most of them had returned to the island only two days back after spending sleepless nights at the relief camps
