SRI LANKA --READ THIS--REALITY CHECK / UPDATE
=============================================

Here's a reality check as of now--this is THE GROUND SITUATION, BELIEVE IT OR NOT
(by seylan@gmail.com):

1. SRI LANKA government says that the displaced are promptly looked after ----which is utter JACK & CRAP. Govt. dropped the ball on this, believe me! It's the volunteer organisations , voluteers & media who did the bulk of relief so far. THe govt. is only now gearing up its efforts PROPERLY.

2. The UN, REDCROSS, etc are USELESS here---they did NOTHING.

3.Many local and Int'l Volunteers and their aid convoys are turned away by security forces etc IN NORTH AND EAST, DEEP SOUTH saying that they could not care less to distribute them.
THE REASON: They are overworked and TOO TIRED to handle anymore distribution efforts. They themselves are fed with the same food items for EVERY MEAL.

3. Displaced people who get relief continue to get more and more while the ones who could not even get a drop of water so far continue to be in dire straights. A lop-sided relief effort is evident though some relief organisations OR the GOVT. would not want to admit it.

4. Many pay ONLY lip service to the idea of "getting relief to access-harder areas".

5. The news from the ground in affected area REFUGEE CAMPS in SOUTH is that most displaced girls are raped by other affected men and/or members of some groups. Rumour has it that security personnel guarding the camps are responsible. To avoid this, Families after families (affected) go to refugee camps first having "deposited" their daughters first in a "safe house/place".

3. Two main tidal waves hit the shore. It is now a known fact in most southern areas, that within moments after the first wave hit, some groups of people did not lose their time and immediately went into action robbing the damaged houses of whatever "robbable"

4. A Sri Lankan policeman was heard telling his superior when they were on the debris clearing duty:

The policeman picks up a purse, shows to his superior, pulls a face and says in a dissapointed manner: "Only Rs. 10 in this (purse) sir!"

5. some People were seen ripping off/cutting eardrums of the female corpses to grab the jewellery remaining in the eardrums of the dead.

In short, the GROUND situation in this country (in affected areas) is UNIMAGINABLE. The rosy picture painted on Sri Lanka disaster is just that--CRAP.
